A root canal is a dental procedure aimed at treating infection or damage in the tooth’s pulp and root canal system. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues.
When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, trauma, or other factors, it can cause severe pain, lead to abscess formation, and lead to very severe health conditions.
Dr. Pham performs the root canal procedure by removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling and sealing it.
The process not only relieves pain but also prevents further infection and saves the natural tooth. It’s relatively quick and painless!
Root Canal: The Process
The process of a root canal typically involves the following steps. Depending on the severity of the decay, the process may look different.
Imaging / X-Rays
An X-ray is taken to assess the shape of the root canals and determine the extent of the infection. Based on the X-rays and a thorough examination, Dr. Pham will determine whether a root canal is needed and discuss the procedure and any alternative options with you.
Anesthesia / Numbing
Local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected tooth and the surrounding area, making the procedure virtually painless.
Access Opening
The dentist drills an opening in the crown of the tooth to gain access to the pulp chamber. In the case of a posterior tooth, this opening is usually made on the chewing surface; for an anterior tooth, it’s made on the backside.
Cleaning and Shaping
Using specialized instruments, Dr. Pham removes the infected or damaged pulp tissue. The empty pulp chamber and root canals are cleaned and disinfected to eliminate bacteria and prepare the tooth for sealing.
The canals are shaped with fine dental files, allowing them to receive the root canal fillings effectively.
Filling
A biocompatible material, usually a rubber-like substance called gutta-percha, is used to fill the cleaned root canals. An adhesive cement is used alongside to ensure complete sealing of the canals.
Restoration
After the root canal is filled and sealed, the tooth needs to be restored to its original function and form. This usually involves:
Temporary Filling: Initially, a temporary filling may be placed to close the opening.
Crown Preparation: Often, the tooth will require a crown to provide added strength and protect it from fracture. The dentist will prepare the tooth for a crown, take impressions, and fit a temporary crown.
Permanent Crown: Once your permanent crown has been prepared at the lab, it will be “delivered” at a subsequent visit, usually a week or two after the initial procedure. Dr. Pham will fit and adjust the crown as needed for a perfect fit.
